University College London

Job description

About us The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health. GOS ICH holds an Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award.About the role We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join an experienced and enthusiastic interdisciplinary team evaluating pain and quality of life in adolescent survivors of haematological cancer. Advances in cancer treatment have significantly improved survival for many children and young people (CYP), but adverse effects on general health and well-being, including chronic pain, may persist for many years. The postholder will work closely with our expert team to recruit adolescents from the Haematology/Oncology Late Effects clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Detailed phenotyping will include: i) history, screening tools and validated questionniares to assess the type of pain, and impact on physical and psychosocial function; ii) quantitative sensory testing to evaluate somatosensory function/pain mechanisms; and iii) assessments of executive processing and cognitive function. Our overall objective is to improve early recognition of factors influencing quality of life, and highlight potential interventions. The postholder will join the Paediatric Pain Research Group, at UCL GOS Institute of Child Health (PI Prof Suellen Walker), and work collaboratively with co-investigators in the Haematology/Oncology Late Effects Service at GOSH (Dr Vesna Pavasovic), Pain Service at GOSH (Dr Helen Laycock), Division of Psychology and Mental Health University of Manchester (Dr Anna Hood), and with our patient partners (Margaret Johnson and GOSH YPAG). This is a fixed-term full-time post for 3 years. The project is funded by the Medical Research Foundation and the PDRA post is available from 2nd September 2024 (negotiable), with a salary of £42,099 – 45,521 per year.About you You are a postdoc with research experience in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field relevant to paediatric pain research.
