Research Fellow – Polymer Chemist
UCL
About usThe UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science offers a highly collaborative and cross-disciplinary environment where clinicians, engineers, allied health professionals and researchers work together to develop innovative treatment approaches. Our focus goes beyond conventional methods, aiming to deliver personalized treatment for each patient. As a world leader in medical and biomedical research, we are at the forefront of advancements in medicine and science, closely aligning our research with growing patient and industry needs. The Division spans three London campuses (Bloomsbury, Royal Free and Stanmore) and comprise three major research departments: Targeted Intervention, Surgical Biotechnology and Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science. Within these departments are world class research centres, specialising in various surgical and interventional fields. Our close ties with the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust foster a unique interface between science and clinical practice. The Division also offers teaching and training in a wide range of subjects with intercalated BSc options for UCL medical students, direct MBBS teaching, undergraduate and postgraduate taught and research programmes for both clinicians and non-clinicians. The Division holds a silver award for the Athena Swan Charter which recognizes advancement of gender equality and aims for representation, progression, and success for all.About the roleThe post is funded by EPSRC Healthcare Hub: The VIVO Hub for Enhanced Independent Living (https://www.thevivohub.com/ ). This role is for a qualified and experienced scientist/engineer who has been working in an academic or commercial research laboratory/company related to design and synthesis of high-performance functional polymers and nanocomposites. We will closely collaborate with partner groups in the VIVO Hub for exploitation of their applications of actuators, wearable and implantable devices, soft robotics. The aim of the projects is to develop future digital-physical enhanced mobility assistance systems. The post holder will contribute to the plan to deliver technical innovation and lead specified work packages developing the experimental plan with Professor Song and other members of the team, and allocating resources to the tasks within the plan. To ensure successful development of novel multi-responsive elastomers, hydrogels, nanocomposites and the applications of mobility-assistance devices, the candidate requires a strong background/knowledge of polymer science and engineering. Experience in wearable sensors/devices, soft robotics, tissue engineering is also desirable. In addition, they also require excellent interpersonal skills to work within and across diverse and interdisciplinary teams.Other
