Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to work right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Performance and REF Manager to join our dynamic teamThe Research Performance and REF Manager will support the Director of Research Excellence to implement, maintain and further develop the University’s research information systems and preparations for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF2029). They will have a key objective to improve systems and processes for gathering of data and evidence for REF, coordinating the internal annual review of research performance (ARR), and supporting the operational and technical aspects of the REF2029 submission. The role is key to the successful delivery of the University’s objectives for research and improving institutional performance and reputation.The Research Performance & REF Manager will:

  • Work in partnership with the Director of Research Excellence to support the delivery of the operational and technical aspects of the University’s preparations and submission to REF 2029 and the annual review of research staff, outputs, impact and environment.
  • Develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of the REF2029 guidance and criteria
  • Develop and deliver training, advice and support to academic and professional services leads on all aspects of the REF submission and use of the university’s Pure CRIS system.
  • Work in partnership with the Director of Research Excellence and other Research Office colleagues and the academic community to ensure the research community has access to the information, support and infrastructure required to consistently deliver internationally recognised research with significant impact and to ensure that objectives for preparation and submission to REF 2029 are collectively met
  • Provide support and insights to support formulation of University-wide strategic plans for research and innovation ensuring that the contribution of the Research Office enhances the University’s wider mission.
  • Promote a high-performing culture based on the principles of equality diversity and inclusion, continuous improvement, and professional development, supported by HR and other policies.

The successful candidate will be required to meet the following pre-requisite requirements for the role:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant numerate discipline, or relevant professional experience, is essential with a PhD being desirable.
  • Prior experience of monitoring and evaluating research, particularly in the context of the UK Research Excellence Framework or similar, with the ability to work with and assemble complex data sets into integrated, user-friendly resources.
  • Knowledge and experience in using, configuring, and supporting current research information systems and research management systems such as Pure, Worktribe, Symplectic Elements, etc.
  • Strong ability to aggregate, interpret, and present complex information clearly and concisely to senior managers and research leaders, including drafting policies and strategic documents.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, influence strategy, and participate in relevant projects and committees.
  • A good understanding of the national and international research and innovation landscape and the role of national research assessment including the UK research Excellence framework, ideally gained by supporting a faculty, UoA or institutional submission to REF2014 or REF2021.
