The
Center for Micro-Engineering Materials (CMEM) at the University of New Mexico
(UNM) is seeking applicants for a Research Professor faculty position,
highly motivated and skilled researchers in development and characterization of
next-generation electrochemical energy conversion materials. The successful
candidate will focus on the synthesis, processing, and advanced
characterization of catalyst materials for fuel cells and water electrolysis
systems. This includes electrocatalysts, ionomers, membrane-electrode
assemblies (MEAs), and related nanostructured materials. The successful
applicants will be hired at the research professor rank
depending on experience and demonstrated qualifications.
The University of New Mexico is the only Carnegie-classified R1 (very high research activity) university in the state and is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution. Our faculty benefit and actively collaborate with federally-funded UNM and School of Engineering research centers, a nationally ranked School of Medicine, and nearby national laboratories (Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Air Force Research Laboratory). The UNM Lobo Rainforest provides an entrepreneurial ecosystem, which includes Rainforest Innovations and the Innovation Academy, that translates research to market.
Minimum Qualifications:
– Ph.D. in Materials Science,
Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
– 4 years or more experience in electrocatalyst
synthesis and optimization.
– Experience in membrane electrode assembly fabrication and testing, preferably
for both acidic and alkaline systems
Preferred Qualifications:
– Proficiency in materials
characterization using: XRD, SEM/EDS, S/TEM, XPS, XRF, BET, EIS, CV, LSV
– Hands-on experience with catalyst material synthesis and characterization and
electrochemical testing including DC and
AC voltammetry and rotating disk electrode techniques.
– Knowledge of and training in DOE safe hydrogen use practices.
– Familiarity with fuel cell or electrolyzer operation and performance metrics.
– Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work
independently and in team environments.
– Excellent communication skills and a track record of professional scientific
presentations.
– Established peer-reviewed publication record on non-precious electrocatalysts
and related topics.
– Knowledge of degradation mechanisms and DOE EERE HFCT durability testing
protocols.
– Proficiency with data analysis tools (e.g., Origin, Python, MATLAB).
– Proficiency in Multiphysics modeling tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS,
MATLAB-SIMULINK)
– Knowledge of DOE EERE HFCT program Roadmap, metrics, and milestones.
– A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and
student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
