Job Description

position Description and Resources:

You will be involved in the Department’s research activities as a Research Scholar in the laboratory of Dr. David MacLeod. Your work location will be in the following locations:

1. HPPL-based: a. Duke South Room 4215 b. Duke Early Phase Research Unit (DEPRU, Duke South 3rd floor) c. Duke Early Phase Research Unit, Pickett Road

2. Clinical-based: a. Duke North/ Duke Medical Pavilion OR b. Duke Ambulatory Surgical Center, North Pavilion c. Duke Arringdon Road Ambulatory Surgical Center

Research Activities:

All your time will be reserved for research activities. We expect you will focus your research on the following:

1. Duke IRB-approved research studies with Dr. MacLeod as the Principal Investigator

2. Duke IRB-approved research studies with Dr. MacLeod as Sub-Investigator, in collaboration with Duke Faculty external to the Department of Anesthesiology, e.g. Dr. Fudim, Department of Cardiology.

3. Duke IRB-approved studies with Department of Anesthesiology Faculty as Principal Investigator, e.g. Dr. Gadsden.

You will perform the following research-related activities:

1. Assist with the submission of prospective research studies to Duke IRB

2. Participate in the screening of potential subjects

3. Assemble the appropriate monitoring equipment for studies

4. Assist with data collection during active study phase: a. Application of sensors, e.g. pulse oximeter b. Collection of blood samples through dedicated sample lines, e.g. arterial blood gas c. Processing of samples using point-of-care devices, e.g. blood co-oximeter d. Completion of study-related tasks, e.g. neurological assessment, ultrasound of rectus femoris muscle

5. Complete associated documentation(electronic and/or paper) for all phases of the study

6. Participate in Follow Up phase

7. Assist with data analysis of study-generated data

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Min Degree Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g. Sc.D., M.D., D.V.M.). Other Credential/Experiential Requirements: Visiting scholar engaging in temporary research at Duke.
