We are seeking a dynamic Research Associate to develop a multi-source machine learning framework for reservoir inflow forecasting. The position will involve close collaboration with co-investigators from partner institutions and opportunities for travel to the region. You will join the Hydro-Climate Extremes Research Group in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford, contributing to cutting-edge research at the intersection of hydropower, machine learning, and climate change resilience.
This position is a three-year position funded by the UKRI Ayrton Challenge programme on the project “SMART-HS: Smart Hydropower Solutions for Sustainable and Equitable Energy Access in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia”. SMART-HS is a collaboration between the University of Oxford, Edinburgh University, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, and the National Centre for Water Resources, Vietnam.
The Smart Hydropower Solutions (SMART-HS) project seeks to revolutionise the optimisation of clean hydropower energy generation in the Lower Mekong region of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia through the implementation of smart and inclusive hydropower prediction services. SMART-HS aims to support the energy efficiency and dam safety of the existing dense hydropower network to align with fluctuating energy demand and reservoir inflows, in a context of unprecedented climate variability, climate change, and ageing infrastructure in the region, while developing inclusive energy practices to ensure that no community is left behind.
Reporting to Professor Louise Slater, the Research Associate will be responsible for developing a multi-source machine learning framework for reservoir inflow forecasting. They will be a member of the Hydro-Climate Extremes Research Group in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. The position will involve travel to Vietnam and the wider region and close collaboration with co-investigators at the other institutions.
This post is fixed-term for 36 months and offered on a full-time basis.
