As a Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) Counsellor, you’ll be the first point of contact for government-assisted refugees (GARs) arriving in Saint John. Your role will be to ensure these newcomers feel welcomed and supported as they transition to their new lives. From arranging temporary accommodations to guiding them through essential services, you’ll help GARs navigate Canadian systems and settle comfortably in the community. This position allows you to make a real impact, offering hands-on support and raising awareness about programs that assist refugees. You’ll be working with a dedicated team and will report directly to the RAP Supervisor at Newcomer Connections.Responsibilities

  • Welcome and assist government-assisted refugees (GARs) upon arrival, ensuring they are safely transported to temporary accommodations.
  • Coordinate temporary accommodations and necessary services such as interpretation and translation.
  • Conduct and document initial needs assessments for GARs.
  • Provide orientation on key aspects of life in Canada, including healthcare, banking, public transport, education, and cultural norms.
  • Facilitate access to federal and provincial programs (e.g., health plans, SIN, National Child Benefit).
  • Collaborate with the Settlement Trainer and community partners to connect GARs with long-term resources and services.
  • Coordinate permanent accommodation and support with furniture and household goods as needed.
  • Monitor and report on client progress through the iCARE database, ensuring accurate and timely records.
  • Work with the RAP Supervisor to identify opportunities for program improvements and community engagement.
  • Participate in public events and foster relationships with community groups to promote refugee support programs.
  • Attend staff meetings, maintain accurate expense reports, and submit all required reports to management.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Community College diploma, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working in a cross-cultural environment, preferably in settlement or refugee services.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly when working with clients who have limited English proficiency.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of additional languages is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated empathy and cultural sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CRM software (experience with iCARE is a plus).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check
