Job description

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) promotes occupational health and safety for all those working on ships, in accordance with international Conventions and standards and industry best practice.

This is in the wider context of the Government’s desire to reduce legislative red tape and to avoid placing burdens on UK industry which are not also met by their competitors.

We are seeking a Seafarer Safety Advisor to join our team, to provide administrative and policy support for the promotion of seafarer’s and fishermen’s safety and health.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:   

  • Administrative responsibility for the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (the Code) and related health and safety publications, including co-ordination of the annual update to the Code and publication of the related Marine Information Note, working in conjunction with the official publisher and PR as appropriate.
  • To manage and monitor consultation exercises launched by the Seafarer safety and human element team.
  • Monitoring developments in food safety training (under National Qualifications Framework), to ensure that catering staff on ships are suitably trained.
  • To support financial transactions and monitoring of invoices and payments.
  • To act as central contact point for all health and safety enquiries sent to Seafarer Safety mailbox.

Person specification

To thrive in this role, you have good communication skills and have experience of working with internal and external key people. You are an organised individual, with experience of balancing multiple work-streams. Your strong organisation skills allow you to prioritise a varied workload, to aid productivity. 

You have excellent administrative skills, including experience of document drafting and minute taking. You have exceptional attention to detail and can comfortably concentrate on your work to do a thorough job. You are a competent user of Microsoft packages. 

Additional Information 

This role will be based in the Southampton HQ (or relevant office). MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. 

The expectation is that you will spend a minimum 60% of your working time based at your principal workplace or out on official business. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.

There may be a requirement for occasional travel on official duty within the UK, which may involve overnight stays. Notice will be given prior to travel.
