About the role

This pivotal role offers you the chance to work closely with the Divisions Manager, Academics, Research teams, Funders and Human Resources to provide essential administrative and financial support to our dynamic team of staff and students.

As a Section Manager the role encompasses managing Finances, confidence with numerical data, preparing Research grant applications using the Imperial costing platform Worktribe and immersing yourself in the stimulating and evolving environment of the Brain Sciences Department.

This position is perfect for a junior administrator eager to step up into a senior role, gaining hands-on experience with an aptitude for quick learning. No day is the same, and every day in the department brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow.

We are delighted to hear from candidates who are great at building professional relationships, grasp new concepts quickly and want to elevate their career in Higher Education.

What you would be doing

As the Section Manager, you will be responsible for the administration of Finance and HR processes for research groups within the Department. Reporting directly to the Divisions Manager, you will be the primary point of contact for your research groups, handling a wide range of administrative and operational queries.

Section Managers are routinely responsible for the below tasks:

  • Supporting new research grant applications, by assisting with costing, supporting submissions via online funder systems, and post-award administration.
  • Diligent financial oversight, including monitoring grant expenditure, meeting with Academics regularly to review grants and advising on the use of non-research funds.
  • Completing HR processes such as contractual changes and consultations.
  • Facilitating and initiating recruitment and onboarding.
  • Reviewing new grant opportunities and their corresponding documentation.
  • Disseminating college information, procedures, and policies in a constructive manner.
  • Acting as a liaison between the department, research services, contracts management teams and other stakeholders for awarded grants.
  • Other ad hoc administrative tasks for their research groups.

This is a multifaceted and challenging post that requires a strong and diverse set of skills, comprising excellent communication, financial management, organisation management, and problem-solving skills, offering a fantastic opportunity for professional growth. In addition, you will need the ability to develop effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, and it is essential that you can work efficiently and accurately under pressure. Prior knowledge of FEC, grant funding rules, and the College costing system, Work Tribe, is desirable but not crucial as comprehensive training will be provided.

The Department has a strong focus on the development of its staff, and you will be encouraged to take advantage of the range of courses offered by the College and expected to undertake any training necessary, to develop your skills to meet the requirements of your role.
