MiCT is calling for proposals for freelance Security Advisory Expert in the framework of its program “MiCT Fellowship for Critical Voices 2024”, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. MiCT invites interested and qualified persons to submit proposals by 10.11.2024.

1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through our collaborative work with our partners, we foster transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.

Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship is aimed at media professionals from crisis and conflict countries who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on journalists and media makers from Afghanistan, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar – with a global mandate. Fellows receive expert safety advice, online training, legal advice, psycho-social support, production support, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

Description of the role

To support the Fellows from East Africa, MiCT is looking for provide support and guidance on security matters.

Deliverables include, but are not limited to:

Risk Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for the fellows based in East Africa and for the team in Nairobi and Kampala to identify potential security risks if required.
  • Identify key risks and vulnerabilities that may impact the fellows’ and the Nairobi and Kampala teams’ safety and operations.

Security Training

  • Organize and deliver digital and physical security training for the fellows and the Nairobi and Kampala teams on best security practices.

One-on-One Consultancy

  • Provide one-on-one security consultancy sessions with fellows where required, to address specific security concerns and offer tailored advice.
  • Ensure fellows have access to ongoing advice as situations evolve in their specific locations.

Local Assistance to Nairobi and Kampala Team

  • Offer local security assistance and support on an hourly basis to the team in Nairobi and Kampala, addressing risks and providing recommendations on security management for their implementation.
  • Provide resource and stakeholder mapping as per requirements
  • Offer training of trainers to project team on aspects such as identifying psychological underpinnings of security threats and how to conduct a risk assessment

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in security risk management, preferably in East Africa, particularly focusing on but not limited to Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan and Uganda
  • Strong understanding of the journalism and security landscape in East Africa.
  • Experience working with journalists in crisis and conflict contexts.
  • Experience providing training of trainers for support staff, including topics such as psychological underpinnings and conducting risk assessments
  • Proven experience in conducting security assessments and crisis management.
  • Ability to develop and deliver security training and one-on-one consultancy.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse teams.
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of regionally relevant languages is an advantage).
  • Flexibility and teamwork.
