Position description

The University of Hong Kong is a research-led comprehensive university that ranks 17th in the world in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. The Department of Politics and Public Administration has played a leading role in Politics and Public Administration research and education since its establishment in 1970. Alongside a competitive PhD research degree programme, the Department offers three highly successful taught postgraduate programmes – Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master in International and Public Affairs (MIPA), and Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) – as well as a thriving undergraduate programme. Our faculty members come from a wide range of disciplines and can be grouped into four clusters: Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Public Administration (including public policy, public management, and non-profit studies). For more information about the Department, please visit https://ppa.hku.hk/.

The Position: Applications are invited for appointment as a Senior Lecturer in Political Theory in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, to commence in August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.

Applicants should possess a PhD in relevant disciplines. They should have at least 6 years’ teaching experience in international university settings and the ability to teach a wide range of core courses currently offered by the Department. These include courses in contemporary analytical political theory with a focus in such fields as liberal neutrality, theories of justice, applied ethics, and current moral controversies. An ability to teach courses on the philosophical implications of new scientific developments, for instance in neuroscience, would be an advantage. The Department particularly welcomes candidates who have experience in the development and application of innovative teaching methods. Candidates should demonstrate how they incorporate research into their pedagogy, and candidates with peer-reviewed publications in esteemed journals in analytical political philosophy are particularly welcome to apply. Experience in managing large undergraduate courses and programmes will be an advantage.

What We Offer: A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and professional leave, medical benefits, and free access to on-campus gyms and libraries. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
