The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is seeking a Senior Research Scholar / Program Manager to lead our work on global labor. The agenda for this program area focuses on workers’ rights, especially in global supply chains. To date, the Center has prioritized labor conditions in apparel manufacturing, on construction sites in the Arabian Gulf, and at cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are now consolidating our work in these sectors to better integrate our efforts and generate more impact. The Center aims to ensure that multinational companies take responsibility for the well-being of their workers, including those who are employed by their suppliers in the developing world. A globalized market economy has lifted millions of people out of abject poverty, but at the same time introduced added responsibilities for global brands and retailers to protect the workers who make the products that are central to their businesses.
At present, we are beginning to examine the effects of global warming on outsourced and migrant workers. We will draw on our past research on manufacturing, migrant construction, and mining to document the human consequences of global warming for workers in these sectors. We will examine the tensions between the pursuit of alternative energy solutions and the well-being of workers,making the case for integration of environmental and human rights agendas in pursuit of a just energy transition.
The new Senior Program Manager will have the opportunity to sharpen our focus and advance our recommendations for reform and the efficacy of our engagement with global companies and with governments.

Our mission is to challenge and empower companies and future business leaders to make practical progress on human rights. Our current focus areas include values-based investing, technology and democracy, and global labor. We are looking for a creative and ambitious leader who is passionate about these issues to join our team.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $125,000-$157,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
