Senior Research Scientist – Global Labor

The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is seeking a Senior Research Scholar / Program Manager to lead our work on global labor. The agenda for this program area focuses on workers’ rights, especially in global supply chains. To date, the Center has prioritized labor conditions in apparel manufacturing, on construction sites in the Arabian Gulf, and at cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are now consolidating our work in these sectors to better integrate our efforts and generate more impact. The Center aims to ensure that multinational companies take responsibility for the well-being of their workers, including those who are employed by their suppliers in the developing world. A globalized market economy has lifted millions of people out of abject poverty, but at the same time introduced added responsibilities for global brands and retailers to protect the workers who make the products that are central to their businesses. 

At present, we are beginning to examine the effects of global warming on outsourced and migrant workers. We will draw on our past research on manufacturing, migrant construction, and mining to document the human consequences of global warming for workers in these sectors. We will examine the tensions between the pursuit of alternative energy solutions and the well-being of workers,making the case for integration of environmental and human rights agendas in pursuit of a just energy transition. 

The new Senior Program Manager will have the opportunity to sharpen our focus and advance our recommendations for reform and the efficacy of our engagement with global companies and with governments. 

• Work with the Center’s Director to define the direction of the program and strategy for research and advocacy.
• Refine and deepen the Center’s work on global labor by conducting independent research, including field research, and writing reports, op-eds, and other written material.
• Lead our ongoing advocacy for adoption of our recommendations, including the organizing of conferences and information sessions, doing media interviews, and participating in other events.
• Supervise program staff and research assistants, and liaise with the Center’s Research Director.
• Integrate program research into business education materials both at Stern and across our Global Business School Network for Business and Human Rights.
• Engage with MBA students and serve as Stern and NYU Law course guest lecturer on global labor research.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $125,000-$157,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. 

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or doctoral degree required.
• Excellent writing and communication skills. Ability to produce rigorous, analytical research that is accessible to business, government, civil society, and the media; ability to forward the program’s advocacy agenda through strong presentation of research and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
• Familiarity with human rights challenges related to global labor.
• Experience in field research and in managing and completing complex, sensitive projects with multiple stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with people from different backgrounds.
• A self-starter with the ability to adapt quickly and motivate others to achieve strategic objectives in a collaborative manner.
• Extensive work experience on global labor, human rights, or related issues within a company, government agency, advocacy organization, university, and/or think tank.
