The practice of responding to emergency calls for assistance to meet the needs and expectations of the University community, in circumstances that could be lifethreatening, often creates an unsafe environment for those supervisors and officers for whom the incumbent is responsible. Additionally, in both emergency situations and routine incidents, there is a need for legal decision making regarding the probable cause to search or to make arrests. The incumbent also has a working knowledge of both the criminal offenses and criminal procedures statutes of the State of Rhode Island, as well as the policies and procedures for report-writing, criminal charging, and the detention policies and procedures of the Providence Police Department. Also, the Providence Police are the charging agency in all criminal matters for Brown University, and as such, they must maintain a close working relationship with the commanding officers and supervisors of that Department.
