Organization Mission

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 and committed to maintaining international peace and security; developing friendly relations among nations; promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. Due to its unique international character, and the powers vested in its founding Charter, the Organization takes action on a wide range of issues, and provides a forum for its 193 Member States to express their views, through the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and other bodies and committees. The work of the United Nations touches every corner of the globe and focuses on a broad range of fundamental issues, like sustainable development, protection of the environment and refugees, disaster relief and mitigation, counter terrorism, as well as disarmament and non-proliferation.

Context

Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination for an informal meeting – virtual- to discuss a draft general recommendation on reparations. The proposed draft general recommendation is in English. As some of the Committee members are native speakers of English and some of the members are native speakers for French, this meeting requires simultaneous translation.

Key Responsibilities

The volunteers will be supporting the virtual Committee meeting on interpretation the participant speeches from English to French and from French to English.
The meeting will be held on Microsoft Teams with optional language channels on 26 September between 14:00-16:00 Geneva time.

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates should be native in English and French. Familiarity with technical terms related to international peace and security will be considered as an advantage. Previous translation experience is considered an asset.
