Position description
The Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) seeks a creative and collaborative part-time Social Media Coordinator to support and grow the organization’s social media presence. A member of the Research & Engagement team, the Social Media Coordinator will create, curate, and carry out the publication of social media content across multiple channels. Social media campaigns are targeted to engage RAC’s user communities, which include researchers, educators and students, and members of the archives, history, and philanthropic professions.
The RAC is the largest single assemblage of historical records of philanthropy in the world with the records of more than 40 foundations, including the Rockefeller, Ford, Henry Luce, William and Flora Hewlett, and John S. and James L. Knight foundations. It also holds the records of nonprofit organizations with strong connections to philanthropy, such as the Social Science Research Council, the National Committee for US-China Relations, and the Institute for International Education.
The RAC attracts a global user base, numbering in the thousands annually and provides broad and equitable public access to RAC collections. Researchers use our collections to explore topics ranging from the history of medicine and science to public health, agriculture, the arts, social sciences, international relations, and urban affairs, to name a few. Our Research & Engagement Program is a staff of historians, educators, designers, and archivists who work in a public history framework to engage constituencies in archival education, primary source research, and historical understanding.
The Social Media Coordinator will report to the Associate Director for Research & Engagement and will be expected to populate and maintain the social media calendar and keep abreast of outreach and engagement trends in the archives and history fields. The primary objective of the RAC’s social media presence is to increase awareness of and engagement around the RAC and its relevant contributions to related professional fields.
Unlike many other not-for-profit or cultural heritage institutions, the RAC is funded by an endowment and does not need to convert online engagement into memberships, sales, or other income-generating activities. Right now, our social media primarily showcases items from our collections, but also occasionally shares resources from related professional fields or highlights aspects of RAC staff work. We are open to new approaches and expect the Social Media Coordinator to help shape future directions for our social media presence.
The ideal candidate will have experience creating social media campaigns for educational or cultural heritage institutions. Knowledge of archives or philanthropic foundations and the nonprofit sector would be helpful but is not necessary.
