Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs, serves as the central administrator of a university-wide program dedicated to increasing the enrollment, retention and graduation rates of students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly African American males.
The Director coordinates the application and project proposal review process and makes funding decisions with the input of the Associate Director and senior administrators in the Division of Student Affairs. Working closely with the Associate Director to develop and utilize the social network websites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to promote the program throughout the college and beyond. The Director will work closely with other Division of Student Affairs administrators, and support programs to coordinate University-wide meetings, conferences, seminars, training and events. The Director also participates in outreach to various CUNY colleges, high schools, and city-wide agencies/organizations to promote and fosters collaborative partnerships with internal partners throughout the University and cultivates relationships with external partners throughout New York City and beyond. As for program development and fundraising, the Director works closely with the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Foundation administrators to develop a fundraising agenda for UMLP. Once grants are secured, the Director serves as the primary contact for funders and coordinates the stewardship of funds from public and private sources that support the UMLP and the Division of Student Affairs.
Finally, the Director is responsible for developing a strategy for the creation of an institute that is dedicated to examining issues and topics related to social and educational equity for students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly African American and Hispanic males. In addition, s/he attends NASPA, professional development activities, programs, workshops and seminars to enhance and increase knowledgeable awareness to the UMLP and college.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF THE WORK:
Program Management and Administration — 40%
- Monitoring the progress of UMLP focusing on diversity recruitment strategies, raising retention and graduation rates and increasing the number of men of color from the community colleges and high schools in the New York City public school system
- Implementing best practices models and strategies established by the central program such as mentorship programs with peer advisor and/or faculty/administrator components.
- Developing assessment tools and keeping track of the progress and engagement of students participating in the UMLP program and the Crear Futuros program as well as their respective academic achievement levels and retention and graduation rates;
- Providing technical assistance to the UMLP program and the Crear Futuros program as needed
- Coordinating evaluation of UMLP and Crear Futuros program outcomes that are required to produce demonstrable results
- Organizing meetings with the Associate Director and Support staff
- Writing regular reports as required by public and private funding sources
- Attending meetings and events sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs
- Maintaining regular and timely communication with the Division of Student Affairs Administrators, CUNY BMI Administrators, Advisory Board members as well as faculty members, students and staff affiliated with the UMLP
Communications and Outreach — 25%
- Representing the UMLP at faculty/senate meetings, CUNY BMI monthly Administrator’s meetings, and suggested meetings from the Vice President of the Division of Student Affairs 2
- Organizing regularly scheduled events and activities such as the UMLP Distinguished Speaker Series and the Annual Induction and Awards Ceremony
- Developing communications tools for the UMLP program and the Crear Futuros program such as brochures and flyers to draw attention to the initiative, its resources and activities
- Developing relationships with faculty and staff members to build a wider constituency throughout the college campus in support of UMLP goals and objectives
- Writing and developing reports and proposals for programs and new initiatives, including presentations for President cabinet meetings, and reports for related Division of Student Affairs
- Writing and developing copy for the UMLP and Crear Futuros programs (respectively) website and promotional materials
Fundraising and Development — 25%
- Developing a fundraising plan for the UMLP
- Identifying funding sources and writing grant proposals;
- Creating an institute dedicated to the study and promotion of social and educational equity for students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education, particularly African American and Latino males
- Developing program and research agenda for the college awareness
Professional development— 5%
- Identifying professional development opportunities for the UMLP staff
- Attending professional development workshops and programs
Other duties— 5%
- Attending the Division of Student Affairs staff meetings
- Attending the CUNY BMI Director’s monthly meetings
- Handling other projects as assigned by the Vice President and Assistant Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree and eight years related experience required.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Master’s degree, J.D., M.D., Ph.D. or other terminal professional degree
- Experience in higher education as a faculty member or higher education administrator
- Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in civil rights, education, law, public policy, student development and student leadership theories and practices.
- Strong interest in and commitment to promoting opportunity and equity in higher education.
- Interest in bridging the gap between theory and practice for the benefit of students from populations that are severely underrepresented in higher education.
- Experience working in higher education and/or a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of students from populations that are underrepresented in higher education.
- Strategic thinker with excellent financial management ability, a record of fundraising success, and knowledge of local, state and federal government.
- Excellent interpersonal and writing skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and to manage competing priorities.
