As part of its ongoing growth and diversification strategy, the University has set ambitious plans to expand its vocational and academic short courses for working professionals and the local community.The city centre location at 3 Centenary Square (The Exchange) has become a key hub for the delivery of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) across the University. This space supports our efforts to broaden our postgraduate and professional education offer, including both classroom and online-based short courses and microcredentials. The building is strategically located alongside the city’s cultural, civic, and corporate institutions on Centenary Square and serves as the front-of-house for University of Birmingham CPD programmes and short courses.To support this aim, we are seeking to appoint an experienced Student Recruitment Manager (Postgraduate & Professional Education) to join our dedicated and innovative External Relations team. This team is responsible for developing our short course portfolio, establishing new partnerships, and driving income-generating activities.This role will work closely with the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment, and colleagues across the University to develop the short course strategy and portfolio. The position sits within the PG Recruitment and Marketing team and is part of the broader Student Recruitment and Marketing team in External Relations, which is responsible for recruiting students from both the UK and internationally.We are looking for individuals with student recruitment, marketing or business development experience, ideally within large, complex organisations. You should be passionate about engaging with people, skilled in interacting with senior corporate professionals and academics, experienced in delivering against KPIs and KPTs, and able to effectively translate complex information into a compelling case for support, both verbally and in writing.Main DutiesStrategic Leadership and Planning

  • Lead the delivery of the University’s strategy for short courses and microcredentials, working closely with academic colleagues and the product development team.
  • Develop and execute a student recruitment plan, including the creation of business cases for short courses and professional education at the University of Birmingham.
  • Contribute to the University’s Short Course and Microcredential Steering Group, helping to bring together CPD offerings across the institution.

The Exchange Project Support

  • Play an active role in the ongoing development of The Exchange at 3 Centenary Square, supporting the CPD business case, capital design, stakeholder engagement, internal communications, and cross-functional activities.

Relationship Building and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain effective, co-ordinated relationships with key internal stakeholders, including senior academic and professional services colleagues, to secure income and opportunities aligned with strategic targets.
  • Implement marketing and recruitment strategies to meet portfolio targets.

Market Research and Opportunity Identification

  • Proactively seek new business opportunities in line with institutional priorities and market demand, ensuring that these are reflected back into the University’s strategy.
  • Collaborate with academic Schools and commercial partners to identify and develop short courses that respond to market needs.
  • Ensure that market research is undertaken, analysed, and incorporated into business cases for new initiatives.

Portfolio Expansion and Relationship Development

  • Develop commercial opportunities and build relationships to expand the short course portfolio and increase the number of learners.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen existing third-party relationships and explore potential partnerships.
  • Manage relationships with other higher education institutions, professional bodies, and commercial/public sector organisations to drive sales and develop broader Corporate Partner relationships.
  • Respond to funding opportunities as they arise.

Process Development and Cross-Institutional Collaboration

  • Work with academic and administrative departments to develop, implement, and monitor new programmes and processes.
  • Manage internal capacity, project tasks, and deadlines through careful resource planning.
  • Support the development of a framework for new CPD initiatives, including models, partners, pricing structures, and routes to market.
  • Ensure that University policies related to short courses and professional education are developed or revised, responding to legal or external policy changes.

Market and Sector Understanding

  • Maintain a strong understanding of the higher education and CPD marketplace in the West Midlands and the UK, including key sectors relevant to the University.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of both credit and non-credit bearing academic programmes and their development, management, and delivery.

Budget and Governance

  • Manage the budget for short courses and other business development opportunities in line with the agreed strategy.
  • Support the Short Course and Microcredential Steering Group in ensuring effective governance of CPD and short courses.

External Awareness

  • Stay informed about external environmental factors that impact the University of Birmingham and its strategic goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Education: Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Experience: Proven track record in student recruitment, marketing, or business development, with a focus on client relationship building. Experience within a professional education portfolio is desirable.
  • Opportunity Pipeline Management: Experience in planning and managing a comprehensive pipeline of opportunities to meet challenging income targets.
  • Business Case Development: Experience in identifying and capitalising on business opportunities, developing business cases, securing stakeholder buy-in, and overseeing implementation.
  • Workload Management: Proven ability to manage a demanding workload and ensure all tasks are completed within deadlines.
  • Sales and Client Relationship Management: Demonstrated business development and sales skills with experience managing client relationships.
  • Target Achievement: Ability to consistently meet targets, milestones, and contracted outputs within agreed timelines.
  • Strategic Partnership Management: Practical understanding of managing business partnerships from opportunity identification through to completion and final sign-off.
  • Influence and Persuasion: Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, challenge convention when necessary, and persuade others to support initiatives.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Capability to quickly assimilate complex issues and present them in a manner that resonates with senior academics and business leaders.
