Job Purpose
The SVP Ad Sales in North America will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive advertising sales strategy that drives revenue, builds strong relationships with key clients, and enhances the value of our advertising offerings. This role is crucial in driving the growth and profitability of our advertising business and ensuring we remain at the forefront of industry trends.. The role will directly lead a high-performing sales team and have oversight over the local marketing team and the US branch of our branded content studio (BBC StoryWorks).
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the advertising sales team in driving revenue and profit growth through direct media sales, sponsorships, partnerships and bespoke content creation.
- Develop and execute a strategic advertising sales plan that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives and growth targets.
- Collaborate actively with inventory owners and shared business functions to coordinate approach to clients and develop business plans that exploit opportunities across all BBCS business activities to ensure maximum financial return.
- Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of the advertising sales team and the overall strategy.
Client Relationship Management
- Cultivate strong, long-term relationships with key advertising clients, agencies, and industry partners.
- Lead key client negotiations and develop customized solutions to meet client needs while maximizing revenue and profit.
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction and retention by delivering exceptional service and value.
- Oversee the development and execution of effective advertising campaigns that drive results for clients.
Market and Industry Insight
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, market conditions, and competitor activities to identify new opportunities and threats.
- Continuously evaluate and adjust sales strategies based on market changes and performance metrics.
- Collaborate with product, marketing, and content teams to create compelling ad solutions that appeal to current and potential clients.
- Liaise with BBCS Editorial and Product teams to ensure that content and digital assets are meeting client requirements and position us effectively against competitors.
Team Management
- Hire, train, and mentor a high-performing advertising sales team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence.
- Provide leadership and guidance to sales managers, account executives, and support staff to achieve targets and exceed expectations.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, set clear goals, and encourage professional development within the sales team.
Revenue Forecasting & Reporting
- Manage the advertising sales pipeline and revenue forecasting, ensuring accurate projections and timely reporting to senior management.
- Analyse sales data to identify trends, optimize pricing strategies, and maximize revenue potential.
- Regularly present performance updates, strategic insights, and revenue forecasts to the executive leadership team.
Compliance
- Ensures compliance with BBC Code of Conduct, Editorial Standards, Advertising and Sponsorship Guidelines, BBCS values and all other internal commercial policies and controls, making sure that all business is conducted with the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, or related field
- 12+ years of experience in advertising sales leadership within a publishing, media, or digital-first environment.
- Strong track record of driving revenue growth and managing high-performing sales teams.
- In-depth knowledge of digital advertising, programmatic and integrated ad solutions.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to use data to inform strategy and optimize performance.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to execute complex sales strategies and adapt to changing market conditions.
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience managing a diverse portfolio of advertising products across multiple platforms.
- Expertise working with a news publisher and selling inventory around news content
- Established network of industry contacts and relationships with major advertisers and agencies.
Compensation
The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $350,000 to $380,000. This range does not include bonus compensation or other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and geographic location of the position.
This range is not inclusive of a competitive bonus, flexible, hybrid working schedule & benefits including but not limited to: 100% BBCS covered medical & dental insurance, vision, & 401k match
