Overview
Utilizing continuous improvement methodologies and best practices, the System Director of Health Information Management (HIM) will oversee, implement, and coordinate all aspects of the HIM and Coding departments for Northern Arizona Healthcare System’s Revenue Cycle Division. The Director of HIM manages all HIM operations, develops revenue cycle policies and procedures, and initiates workflow improvements and standardizations. The Director is responsible for the following Revenue Cycle departments; Coding, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), Health Information Management (Medical Records), and Transcription.
This is a Remote position – “NAH reserves the right to make hiring decisions based in part on applicants’ state of residence if outside the state of Arizona”.
Responsibilities
Department Management
- Monitors appropriate revenue cycle performance benchmarks for the organization and partners closely with revenue cycle teams in support of denials management
- Oversees coding, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), abstracting, transcription, and release of information, and; activities with performance improvement, data/statistics for internal and other medical staff meetings, reports of record delinquency and physician suspension, etc.
- Designs, implements, and manages programs to provide accurate, timely, and compliant coding and abstracting services.
- Ensures HIM operations are executed in an effective and efficient manner to perform within established budget
- Develops policies and procedures for the collection, storage, and retrieval of patient health data
- Plans and directs services related to Health Information Management (HIM) in accordance with applicable legal, professional, and accreditation standards.
- Services include identity management, document management, dictation and transcription, analysis, record completion, release of information, coding and DRG assignment, data quality and reporting.
- Ensures health information services are provided in a way that consistently exceeds customer expectations, effectively represents the HIM department throughout the Health System and serves as the liaison to governmental, educational, and accrediting organizations for HIM related matters.
- Drives work effort to meet/exceed targets, delegates projects and requests where possible and retains Director level work.
- Ensures that patient medical records are maintained in compliance with all laws, government regulations and accreditation standards. Ensures that medical records forms, systems, policies and principles are applied uniformly and consistently throughout the Health System.
- Provides resources to research and correct coding/billing issues as needed. Works collaboratively with Revenue Cycle leaders and Department Directors.
Personnel Management/ Staff Development
- Oversees HIM staff
- Demonstrates leadership using written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to effectively guide the work of reporting team to accomplish the delivery of the mission and vision of NAH through technology.
- Ensures staff members are knowledgeable and monitors issues identified through audits, reviews and aggregate data analysis
- Performs or oversees personnel management functions. Provides training and support to HIM staff. Works collaboratively with physicians and department Managers to achieve department and hospital requirements and goals
- Hires, provides performance assessments and feedback, and develops staff
- Conducts timely performance reviews and provides on-going feedback
- Establishes and monitors individual and team goals and objectives
- Responsible for personnel issues, such as vacation, patient time off, and general time and attendance issues
- Creates opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments of staff, providers and peers
- Challenges people, ideas, and opinions to develop the best possible support
Compliance/Safety
- Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
- Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee’s area of responsibility.
- If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
- Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
- Ensures compliance with all federal and state laws regarding privacy and security as applied to record management activities. Develops procedures and standards to ensure confidentiality of patient health information; provides for timely and appropriate release of medical information in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Works collaboratively with leadership, risk management, privacy/security, compliance, IT, and HR to minimize the potential risk of privacy and security breaches, to mitigate damages if any, and to resolve related issues. Additionally, Implements and monitors compliance with all aspects of the Medical Staff Bylaws/Rules and educates staff as new requirements are approved
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field required
Experience
- Minimum of five years’ experience as an HIM Director in an acute care facility – Required
Thorough knowledge of hospital revenue cycle
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
Certification & Licensures
- RHIA or RHIT certified – Required
- At least one of the following is required: (Past or Current Certifications) Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Procedural Hospital Coder (CPHC), Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP), Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS)
