The Department of Psychology in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the level of Teaching Assistant Professor in Psychology. Applicants should have a strong track record of innovation and success in undergraduate teaching and be able to teach both introductory-level and upper-level college courses in Psychology. The field of specialization is open, but candidates with the qualifications and experience to teach in the following areas are especially encouraged: Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, upper-level courses on clinical or cognitive psychology topics, and labs on any topic. We value courses that include a diversity focus and we encourage candidates to describe how they will bring diversity, equity, and inclusion into their courses.

This position is pending budgetary approval and is outside of the tenure stream. The position will begin in the Fall 2025 semester with an initial appointment of two years; subsequent renewals are presumptive subject to departmental needs. Teaching Professors in Psychology are full-time faculty appointed for 9 months each year and teach three undergraduate courses per semester during the fall and spring semesters. This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the United Steelworkers union.

Teaching Professors have the opportunity to mentor undergraduates in teaching and research – http://www.psychology.pitt.edu/undergraduate/experiential-learning, mentor graduate students in teaching – https://psychology.pitt.edu/education/teaching-program/advanced-achievement-teaching-psychology, and participate in a vibrant, teaching-focused community within the department and the University. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Psychology or a related field by August 2025
  • Evidence of high-quality undergraduate teaching as the instructor of record in Psychology

     

Duties:

  • In consultation with the Department of Psychology, teach three in-person courses each semester.
  • Meet with students to provide support for their learning and mentoring, appropriate to their educational needs.
  • Provide service to the Department of Psychology, to be arranged with the chair

  • A curriculum vitae that clearly enumerates the candidate’s education, teaching experience i.e., the number of unique courses, the number of times each course has been taught, the size and format of each class, and whether the candidate was an instructor of record, mentoring experience, and service roles
  • A teaching statement that includes the candidate’s teaching philosophy with examples, where relevant, teaching experience, and teaching interests
  • Recent quantitative and qualitative student evaluations of teaching, including original and complete student responses in addition to any summaries.
  • A diversity, equity, and inclusion DEI statement that includes the candidate’s general understanding of DEI; the candidate’s incorporation of DEI into their teaching; the candidate’s record of relevant activities such as service and mentoring; and the candidate’s specific lans and goals for advancing DEI at the University of Pittsburgh see www.diversity.pitt.edu – http://www.diversity.pitt.edu/ and guidelines for writing a DEI statement – https://www.as.pitt.edu/guidelines-writing-statement-contributions-diversity-equity-and-inclusion.
