APEC’s teaching programs include Bachelor of Science degrees in Applied Economics and Agricultural & Food Business Management, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Applied Economics. Its research and extension focus are broadly defined as Food Systems; Development, Growth, & Trade; Environmental & Resource Economics; and Public Sector Economics. APEC is the administrative home for the Sustainability Studies Minor, which is jointly run with the Institute on the Environment. The Sustainability Studies Minor immerses undergraduate students in the exploration of real-world problems from a variety of academic perspectives, incorporating disciplines from across the natural, social and applied sciences. Position Description: SUST 3017 is one of the elective courses for the Sustainability Studies minor. The course focuses on understanding the interconnections between health, economic, and environmental disparities as it applies to environmental justice. Students will be asked to synthesize multiple disciplinary perspectives, participate in small group activities, service learning, and digital mapping while finding ways that they can take action for sustainability. The course includes a field trip including a bike tour! The SUST 3017 Environmental Justice Instructor, a temporary, part-time position of less than 14 hours per week for up to 14 weeks. The focus of this position is to instruct the SUST 3017 Environmental Justice course. This includes developing and delivering content related to the learning goals of the course, as described below, as well as maintaining office hours and providing student assessment. Duties/Responsibilities Coordination and evaluation of students’ projects for community including communicating clear expectations between students and community organizations, meeting weekly with students, and assisting with project tasks Grading deliverables and other small assignments Leading small group discussion sessions connecting course theory to community projects. Setting up field trips and community engagement logistics Teaching undergraduate courses in Sustainability Studies program Advising and mentoring groups of undergraduate students Contributing to the ongoing development of Sustainability Studies curriculum Qualifications Required/Essential Qualifications: Advanced degree in a related major Excellent writing skills Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability and systems thinking. Experience or ability to teach sustainability related courses at the collegiate level. Experience and ability to organize and manage students projects Experience working/teaching with culturally diverse students Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff and the community Experience working corroboratively with academic departments and/or in the community. Experience advising/mentoring students. Preferred: Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the collegiate level.
