Job Title:Technical Communications Intern

FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

Department:Engineering

Reports to:Technical Communications Manager

GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:
Work in the technical communications group supporting the creation of technical documentation for custom railroad maintenance equipment. Tasks include creating operator manuals, maintenance instructions, lockout / tagout manuals, and other technical communication materials.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in authoring technical content under the direct guidance of another technical writer or engineer.
  • Analyze technical specifications and performance data to develop clear and concise documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering to gather information and resolve documentation issues.
  • Prepare outlines and illustrations to support technical documents.
  • Perform duties and subtasks in area of discipline of low complexity for a project or projects.

education:Pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, or a related field.

experience:Achieved junior status or higher. The individual shall also have completed the “core” coursework for his/her chosen discipline.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • The individual will learn and abide by established practices and procedures to complete assignments.
  • Ability and willingness to learn the necessary tools as required for area of discipline.
  • Ability and willingness to learn Application and integration design skills in area of discipline.
  • This is an intern level position that requires close supervision with little to no independent work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong problem solving, communication, and analysis skills
  • Ability to read and analyze engineering schematics
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other 3D modeling software
  • Experience with DITA or other component content management systems (CCMS)
