We find the very best stories from the very best minds, and proudly connect them to as many people as possible under our iconic Penguin brand, which next year celebrates its 90th birthday as a beacon of quality, design and culture for audiences around the world. We publish books across all formats and have a strong brand licensing programme through our Penguin Ventures division.
Our brand legal team looks after the Penguin brand as well as much loved publishing and children’s character brands like Puffin, Ladybird, The World of Peter Rabbit and The Snowman. We advise the business on a broad range of brand related matters, manage our extensive international trademark portfolios and ensure that our brands are protected and our intellectual property (IP) rights enforced. And that’s where you come in.
We are looking for someone to join Penguin Random House as a Trade Marks Assistant on a part-time basis (3 days per week, based in our office at Embassy Gardens at least 2 days per week). Reporting to our senior brand strategy lawyer, you will work closely with your colleagues in the brand legal team (our senior brand strategy lawyer, brand protection lawyer and IP and commercial lawyer) and, from time to time, our anti-piracy manager.
Your responsibilities will principally involve providing a range of administrative support to the brand legal team, including:
- Assisting with the preparation of formalities, supporting evidence and documentation for trade mark actions and legal proceedings.
- Undertaking research tasks on a variety of trade mark (and sometimes other IP) related topics.
- Updating records, generating reports and undertaking other administrative tasks utilising our trade marks management system.
- Managing invoicing – including liaising with external providers, using internal invoicing systems to assist with approvals and processing, and assisting with invoicing queries.
- Undertaking longer term trade mark related administrative projects, such as scanning and indexing of materials/documents.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to support our anti-piracy manager, including undertaking research into infringing content and assisting with takedown requests.
Your profile:
We’re looking for an enthusiastic, conscientious team player with excellent attention to detail and communication skills, who is good at prioritising, and works well with deadlines. You will need to be competent at using Word, Excel, Adobe and, ideally, you will have worked with and used trade mark management, invoicing and electronic signature systems previously.
Prior experience of working in a law firm or in-house legal team as a legal assistant, legal secretary or paralegal, ideally in the field of trade marks, brand protection or IP generally, would be highly desirable. A paralegal qualification is ideal though not essential.
About Penguin:
We’re the UK’s largest publisher; made up of some 2,000 people and publishing over 1,500 books each year. Our doors are open to all kinds of talent. In a constantly evolving industry, we work hard to stretch the definition of the word publisher. Here, you’ll work with a breadth of talent who all play their part to make each of our books a success. Together, we make books for everyone because a book can change anyone.
