The work we do here matters.Department Overview You’ll be part of a dynamic and supportive team learning all the skills to operate and maintain the Airwave TETRA network. This network supports the UK’s emergency blue light services and many others, providing them with critical communications coverage to 99% of England, Scotland and Wales. Being resilient, effective and covering the far reaches of the UK this differs from your standard phone network. We ensure it is available in the moments that matter, saving lives and supporting its users 365, 24/7.You’ll gain a wide reaching telecommunications knowledge and understanding deemed acceptable by the operations manager in many specialist activities. These include, but not limited to, radio and transmission principles and utilisation, mast/antenna repairs, radio interference detection, network optimisation, 2nd line customer control room support/maintenance. This role has a huge variety of aspects that you’ll have the chance to experience.Job DescriptionPLEASE NOTE – This role is primarily based in the North Wales area, ideally you will be located in and around Caernarfon / Bangor area (not essential). To be considered for this role you are required to be located in the desired area or able to consider relocating to that area.Key Accountabilities:

  • Accountabilities and role responsibilities will change and increase as your experience and skills progress over the training period.
  • Once fully qualified / competent as a Junior Field Engineer you will be a vital member of this dynamic team. We will support and guide you through this process, providing an 18 month training program in the following areas:
  • Safely climb telecom installations and towers as part of a 2 engineer team.
  • Maintain telecom transmission systems at height.
  • Safely inspect and repair electrical systems within our installations to a recognised standard (18th Edition).
  • Safely install, maintain and repair TETRA base sites and its power (AC/DC) requirements.
  • Data transmission elements used within the Airwave network.
  • Maintenance and repair of data centre and emergency services control rooms.

As you work toward gaining the essential knowledge and skills to allow you to work independently, once completed and adjudged to be competent you will:

  • Respond to Network Incidents.
  • Support our telecommunications transmission systems.
  • Site planned maintenance visual inspection and functional check.
  • Electrical inspections.
  • Structural Inspections.
  • Lightning Protection Inspections.
  • Customer Control Room inspections.
  • Upgrades/downgrades of equipment.
  • Mast climbing activities.
  • Antenna/Microwave equipment replacement.
  • Hardware / Software replacement.
  • 1st and 2nd line maintenance.
  • Upon qualification / competency, partake in a 1 in 4 call out rota.

Basic RequirementsSkills and Experience Needed:

  • Be comfortable with heights. Climbing tower structures to replace equipment – (following the completion industry recognised training – provided).
  • Expectations of travel, and a clean drivers licence.
  • IT capable / competent. Good grounded understanding of IT systems.
  • Ability to work solo and as a team member.
  • Interest in modern telecommunications technologies
  • Comfortable working outdoors as the role is predominantly field based, which can mean being outside, day or night in all weather conditions at all times of the year, across all types of environment and terrain that underpins the UK.

IMPORTANT – This role requires SC / NPPV3 Security Clearance. The candidate will ideally already hold a current UK Security Clearance, OR be willing to undergo Security vetting, following a Baseline Personnel Security Screening (BPSS) check.
