Basic Function

Instructs, conducts, and develops training programs for Bus Operator Trainees, Bus Operators and other designated METRO employees as requested. Promotes safe operations and standardized training to affect a better trained work force. Conducts training on the core functions of Transportation to enhance the productivity of the department. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with applicable rules and safety procedures.

Responsibilities and Specific Duties

  • Conducts classroom training in Bus operations, Defensive Driving, Passenger Relations, CDL training Learning Management Systems (LMS), Computer based training, Simulator and other related training skills and procedures that will ensure and support the safe delivery of service.
  • Observes, evaluates, and monitors (on the bus and in the classroom) Bus operators/trainees’ performance as it relates to mastering the necessary skills and techniques to operate safely.
  • Tracks training/safety records for the types of training delivered to include Basic, recertification, special training, new equipment.
  • Makes recommendations for continued progress, (i.e., additional training, graduation, or elimination) through the training process.
  • Trains department operating personnel and other employees in the application of Authority and departmental policies, procedures, rules using guidelines and requirements set forth by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
  • Retrains personnel returning to work after a leave of absence or because of other agreed-upon work-related issues.
  • Counsels Bus Operators and prepares written documents concerning Operators’ performance. Cites Operators for rule and standard operating procedure violations.
  • Operates revenue and non-revenue vehicles in the yard, streets, and highways or during emergency situations when required.
  • Performs physical performance evaluations for new Bus Operator candidates for compatibility.
  • Assists in the development of curriculum to revise current content and/or to develop new content, to include preparation and delivery of special training programs for; new bus equipment, ADA sensitivity/wheelchair, (new hardware on the bus requiring the Operator’s attention) or federal or local regulations pertaining to CDL drivers in their performance of duties.
  • Maintains cross training on the various class subjects within the Training division.
  • Performs undercover surveillance when necessary to confirm customer complaints or other reports regarding Operators’ driving performance and/or behavior.
  • Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
  • Applies SMS (Safety Management System) methods and principles in daily routine and supports all aspects of the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
  • Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

High school diploma or GED is required. Associate degree is preferred.

Years & Experience Required

Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a Bus Operator, to include a minimum of one (1) year Relief Training and/or supervisory experience is required. Experience with making formal presentations.

Note: In the 24 months prior to applying for this position the applicant must also meet the following: No preventable accidents.

For internal applicants: No preventable accidents, no more than 2 reprimands, no more than 3 misses, no suspensions, no violation of Article 500 of the Labor Agreement within the past 2 years.

Knowledge & Skills Required

A valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger endorsement is required. Must meet METRO’s requirements regarding motor vehicle records. Good communications (written/verbal) skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
