JOB DESCRIPTION

Mission and objectives

The UNDP Sustainable Energy Hub is a network of partners that work alongside countries to transform energy systems though an integrated agenda focused on the policy, technology and financial shifts that shape sustainable economic development. We help countries build net-zero, people-centered societies driven by a just, sustainable energy transition. Our core principle is to promote an integrated agenda that supports energy for development, including by mobilizing partners to enable 500 million additional people to have access to sustainable, reliable, affordable energy by 2025, leaving no-one behind. The global transformation of energy systems has already started, but is being altered by the current geopolitical context. However, this transformation must be accelerated, and it must be done in a way that advances the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Energy Hub is UNDP’s answer to these challenges. To drive the systems-level change needed, the Sustainable Energy Hub aims to bring about a completely new way of thinking, doing business, connecting people and knowledge. UNDP’s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan has put sustainable energy at the heart of a joint corporate mission, and UN-Energy has pledged to reaching key energy milestones by 2025. UNDP will focus efforts on mobilizing partners and catalzing action to provide access to sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy – both electricity and clean cooking – to 500 million people by 2025, focusing on the world’s poorest communities. UNDP will not do this alone – our role here is to mobilize strong, meaningful, impactful partnerships to deliver action on the ground. We aim to bring about a new way of thinking about energy and advocate for an integrated, inclusive approach, where all stakeholders participate meaningfully in its design.

Context

As part of the Sustainable Energy Hub’s communications strategy, we are developing a comprehensive mapping of key influencers, thought leaders, and experts in sustainable energy and its intersections with policy, governance, finance, SIDS, digitalization, AI, data, and health. This effort aims to ensure our content reaches the right audiences and fosters meaningful engagement by tagging influential voices in relevant discussions. The volunteer will be responsible for researching, categorizing, and organizing a structured database of individuals and their social media handles, with LinkedIn as the priority platform. The final output should be a practical and easy-to-use list, enabling efficient tagging and outreach. Additionally, the volunteer will identify the top youth energy influencers across the Global North and South, ensuring balanced representation and engagement with emerging voices in the sector.

Task Description

The volunteer will compile a comprehensive and well-organized list of influential figures in sustainable energy-related fields. The final deliverable should be a structured, robust database that allows for easy reference when tagging relevant experts on LinkedIn and other platforms. The research will focus on identifying key influencers, thought leaders, and authors across the following thematic areas: energy, energy and policy; governance; finance; SIDS; digitalization (including AI and data); and health (7 thematic areas in total). Additionally, there will be a dedicated effort to map youth energy influencers in both the Global North and Global South. Each individual identified must be assigned to one of the UNDP regional bureaus: RBA (Africa), RBAS (Arab States), RBAP (Asia and the Pacific), RBEC (Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States), or RBLAC (Latin America and the Caribbean). The final list should include approximately 40 individuals per thematic category, totaling around 240 names. Additionally, the research should identify the top 60 youth energy influencers, ensuring a balanced representation between the Global North and Global South. The final deliverable must be structured in an Excel file, ensuring that each individual is clearly categorized by theme and region. The information should include full names, titles, affiliations, LinkedIn profiles as a priority, and other social media handles if available. The volunteer will also propose a practical and efficient tagging system within the Excel file to streamline the process of selecting individuals for mentions in posts. The goal is to make the list immediately useful and accessible, allowing for quick reference and engagement with key figures in energy discussions.
