Mission and objectives

When interacting with socio-economic and political factors, climate change can exacerbate conflict risks, thereby affecting human, national and international peace and security. This interplay also has implications for climate action. Whilst among the hardest hit by climate change, most countries and communities affected by fragility and conflict are also among those that have contributed the least to the climate crisis. The Climate Security Mechanism (CSM) responds to growing calls for action by affected communities, Member States, regional organizations, experts and policymakers around the world. The CSM is a joint initiative by the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Department of Peace Operations (DPO). It aims to strengthen the capacity of the United Nations (UN) and its partners to systematically analyze and address the linkages between climate change, peace, and security (CPS). The CSM leverages partnerships and strengthens its work by drawing on experiences and capacities of its four constituent entities.

Context

The Online UNV will work under the supervision of the CSM (UNDP) Policy Specialist and CSM Secretariat, with technical communications support provided by the UNDP Communications, will be responsible for one or more of the following duties: Publication design (graphic design): • Design the Climate Security Mechanism’s annual progress report and any other publications in the pipeline. • Support the Quality Assurance Process of the publications. • Ensure adherence to UN design and branding guidelines. Social media (graphic design): • Assist in graphic design for social media and websites – images, GIFs and short videos. • Assist in creating social media copies and coordinate scheduling of social media posts on relevant platforms. Social media (communications): • Prepare communication and campaigns for various social media channels to raise awareness on the climate, peace and security agenda. • Assist in drafting or editing material to promote activities of the Climate Security Mechanism. • Support coordination with other teams as required. Web (communications): • Assist in the creation of textual content for websites and social media. • Translation or editing of content. • Assist in the technical and editorial documentation. • Upload content on the website or other content management tools, such as Trello. • Summary/ analytical tasks, assessing audience and communications impact. • Assist in maintaining and improving the web presence of Climate Security Mechanism. • Support organization of webinars, online meetings etc. Multimedia (graphic design recording and video editing): • Support the production of multimedia content, including videos for various audiences • Assist in the creation of newsletters (graphic design), coordinating with the CSM secretariat and supporting compilation of information, as needed

Task Description

We are looking for up to three Online Volunteers who under the guidance of the CSM (UNDP) Policy Specialist and CSM Secretariat in close collaboration with the wider CSM team, UNDP Climate and Security Risk team and UNDP Communications, to support us by producing up to 15 graphic designs for progress report and other graphics including event materials/brochures/social media cards/etc. In particular, each Online Volunteer is asked to: • Collect information on document/material background (e.g., target audience, design style, branding guidelines) to inform design development. • Create draft designs for up to 15 materials (e.g. progress reports, event materials, brochures, social media cards and GIFs) based on requirements, collaborating with CSM focal points and adhering to UN communication standards provided by UNDP Communications. • Finalize designs based on guidance and feedback received, using personal computers, applications, and software, ensuring compliance with agreed specifications and UN corporate design guidelines. The design/layout should follow the corporate design guidelines based on the UN standards which will be shared with the Online Volunteers. The Online Volunteers will have the opportunity to build connections with the UNDP Climate and Security Risk team, UNDP Communications and the broader CSM team across UNDP, DPPA, UNEP and DPO, and learn about the ways in which graphic design can support the communication of the evolving climate, peace and security agenda, climate action, peacebuilding and beyond.
