Duties and Responsibilities
The duration of the internship is for three (3) months with a possibility of extension to six (6) months. This internship is UNPAID in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. This internship is located in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) of the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established by the General Assembly in June 2017 (A/RES/71/291). The Office has five main functions: (a) provide leadership on the General Assembly counter-terrorism mandates across the United Nations System; (b) enhance coordination and coherence across the 45 Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force entities to ensure the balanced implementation of the four pillars of the Strategy; (c) strengthen the delivery of United Nations counter-terrorism capacity- building assistance to Member States; (d) improve visibility, advocacy and resource mobilization for United Nations counter-terrorism efforts; and (e) ensure that due priority is given to counter-terrorism across the United Nations System and that the important work on preventing violent extremism is firmly rooted in the UN Global Strategy. The overall aim of the Centre is to support Member States in the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy through capacity building. This internship is offered within UNOCT/UNCCT’s Global Programme on Prosecution, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (PRR) provides technical assistance to Member States in the development and implementation of comprehensive and tailored prosecution, rehabilitation and reintegration strategies for individuals whom they have reasonable grounds to believe are terrorists, including foreign terrorist fighters, and their accompanying family members, in accordance with international law. The intern will work under the supervision of the Unit Chief of the Global Programme on PRR. The internship is for a period of six months. The internship is unpaid and full-time (35 hours). The internship may be carried out remotely, in-person, or hybrid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background. The intern is expected to perform in the areas of programme management and legal affairs related to counter-terrorism, with a specific focus on PRR, including: • Contribute to substantive research and analysis of issues related to Member States’ efforts on PRR, and in interpreting international, regional and domestic legal instruments. • Assist in the preparation of technical inputs, visibility materials, reports, briefing papers, talking points, background notes, presentations. • Participate in meetings and conferences, as appropriate, and draft the respective notes, summaries and reports. • Support the organization of meetings, conferences, side events to strengthen strategic engagement with UN system partners. • Assist in the preparation of training workshops, fact-finding missions, and capacity building initiatives. • Assist in the preparation of project documentation and reports, and monitoring of project implementation. • Support data collection and conduct research and analysis on relevant topics. • Perform other tasks, as required.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the United Nations Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. Experience in programme management is an asset. Experience in undertaking research, drafting background notes and reports, is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Information
The intern will support data collection and conduct research to contribute to the substantive research and analysis of issues related to Member States’ efforts on PRR, and in interpreting international, regional and domestic legal instruments in Iraq, Central Asia, the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel. · Participate in meetings and conferences, as appropriate, and draft the respective notes, summaries and reports. · Support the organization of meetings, conferences, and events to strengthen strategic engagement with UN system partners. Specifically, the intern will support implementation of UNOCT-co-led events at the 4th Riyadh International Humanitarian Forum, the Cross-Regional Conference on the Repatriation, Prosecution, Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Returnees from Conflict Zones, among others. · Assist in the preparation of training workshops, fact-finding missions, and capacity building initiatives. · Assist in the preparation of project documentation and reports, and monitoring of project implementation. Specifically, the intern will provide inputs from a legal and programmatic perspective to the UNCCT Annual Report, three donor reports, and PRR briefing notes and talking points.
