Mission and objectives

UNOPS is an operational arm of the United Nations, supporting the successful implementation of its partners’ peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development projects around the world. UNOPS has engaged closely with the Government of Nepal and several development partners in the reconstruction efforts of the government of Nepal, including the assessment of damaged buildings and enrolment of beneficiaries into housing grant schemes. UNOPS Nepal has supported retrofitting of damaged houses, reconstruction of disability-friendly schools, homeowners engagement in the reconstruction process, modernization and improvement of policing services, and delivering health interventions to support COVID-19 response efforts in the country. Context

UNOPS Nepal is currently working on several new engagements to support the government of Nepal under Security and Justice, Health, Climate Change, DRR, Urban development, and procurement support, among others. As a part of the Cities 4 Women: Inclusive and Climate Resilient Urbanization in Nepal project team, the youth volunteer will be responsible for a pivotal role in supporting the participation process in municipalities, collaborating with key stakeholders, and aiding in the creation of organizational materials such as factsheets and information-sharing resources. Moreover, the incumbent contributes to the formulation and execution of enduring project business plans, strategies, emphasizing long-term and strategic thinking to shape the project positively. Additionally, they possess the ability to anticipate and discern the consequences and significance of future decisions and activities across different facets of the organization, ensuring its holistic and forward-thinking development.

Task Description

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and in close coordination with the project team, the Architecture Support UNV will be responsible for developing a comprehensive strategy for knowledge management in line with the project ”s documents. The UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: ● Support project with design of public open spaces, ● Organize participatory approach to design and prepare activities reports, ● Coordinate and prepare stakeholder meetings, ● Prepare reports of the events and meetings.

Living conditions and remarks

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, lies under Phase 1 of UN Security classification, but is subject to change depending on the security situation’s developments. Living conditions in Kathmandu are good with comfortable inexpensive flats (furnished and unfurnished) available within the city. Both imported and local foods and clothing are abundantly available. There is a short supply of water and it is also not safe to drink without treatment. Public transport is easily available and generally reliable though traffic congestion is extremely high. Kathmandu has a temperate climate with lowest temperatures falling close to zero at night during winter and, mild but humid climate during the monsoon period, mid-June to end September. Nepal is a unique country and provides for an enriching environment, but also requires cultural awareness.
