For every child, a champion
City Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) is a globally accepted urban sanitation approach. Since 2021, UNICEF and Gates Foundation has been promoting CWIS approach in Bangladesh. UNICEF-Gates Foundation’s City Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) project has been implementing in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) areas in both formal and informal settlement which has three major outputs (1) By 2026, Ensure safely managed sanitation services for 0.8 million people living in urban formal settlement through “Scheduled Desludging Scheme:” A Public Private Partnership Model; (2) By 2026, Demonstrate wastewater reusing scope using Sanitation Transformative Technologies in urban informal settlements (Low-income communities) and (3) By 2026, Determine on-site and off-site sanitation market segmentation through Sanitation Masterplans.
Beside of CWIS, UNICEF with SWISS NetCom support has been implementing Climate Smart WASH Systems for Children in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) areas at two low-income settlements (LICs) called Bastohara and Rupshar Char. Climate SMART WASH project has three main outputs, (1) Ensuring access to climate-resilient water supply systems and water safety planning; (2) Ensure climate resilient, sustainable, safely managed sanitation; and (3) WASH in Health Care Facilities.
How can you make a difference?
The incumbent will work closely with WASH Specialist to achieve CWIS and Climate SMART WASH projects output 2, urban sanitation related targets. In 2025, under climate SMART WASH project the major components will be rolled out include: (i) demonstrate two (02) transformative sanitation technologies for onsite wastewater (Black) treatment and reuse for two low-income society in KCC. Similarly under CWIS project, the major components will be rolled out include: (i) Establish a sustainable O&M system for continue functionality of four (04) piloted wastewater treatment and reuse plants under DNCC (03 treatment plants) and RCC (01 treatment plant); (ii) capture lesson learned from transformative technological solutions, document, disseminate and scale up (iii) certification of treated wastewater quality from Department of Environment (DoE) for reuse; and (iv) Proof of community acceptability of treated wastewater reuse for their toilet /road cleaning/plantation etc.
S/He will also contribute to output three (03) under SWISS NatCom project. In 2025, the components will roll out under this output include: (i) Demonstrate an innovative (Design and installation process) medical waste management plant (MWMP) to safely manage 500 kg medical waste per day generated from 99 public and private hospitals through implementing a functional and sustainable MWMP in KCC to reduce nosocomial infections; (ii) Environmental clearance certificate from DoE; (iii) Develop technical guideline include O&M guideline and SOP and training manual; (iv) quality control, monitoring and supervision; and work to scale up MWMP.
The incumbent will provide technical assistance, guidance, and quality assurance support to UNICEF CWIS Lead and Government Officials to develop, analysis and implement a variety of technical tasks related to urban sanitation. This will include innovation in technology options, designs and installation process, development of technical guidelines like O&M, SOP, feasibility assessment, BoQ review, quality assurance of construction works and treatment performance assessment of the facilities, follow-up monitoring of O&M practices, DoE certification, poof for reuse and capacity building training.
