The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in The UN System and Multilateral Engagement Division, based in New York USA.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

The UN System and Multilateral Engagement Division, based in New York, is a key interface between WFP and international political, peace and security, development, and humanitarian actors. The Division works to galvanize WFP’s government partners to fulfill their commitments under the 2030 Agenda, mobilizing attention and efforts towards a world without hunger.

The Multilateral Division is seeking to fill 2 intern positions, based in New York.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Title of Post: Internship- External Relations Assistant
  • Supervisor: Deputy Director of NYC office

  • Expected Start Date: January 2025

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of office, the candidate will perform the following duties:

For General Assembly, Special Sessions, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Security Council, and other intergovernmental fora, assist WFP staff members following assigned events with all activities related to them, including preparatory meeting and preparing NFRs on key points and outcomes.

  • For Country-Specific or Regional Taskforces, UN Development Group (UNDG), UN Reform, Development, Programming Tools, attend in a support role of the staff member in charge, take notes and report as necessary, flag issues of consequence to WFP.
  • For thematic and cross-cutting issues, including Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Change, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, Emergency Preparedness, Humanitarian/Development Funding and Financing, Gender etc. As required, attend in a support role of the staff member in charge, take notes and report as necessary, flag issues of consequence to WFP.
  • Support the planning and execution of events hosted by WFP in inter-governmental and inter-agency fora. In consultation and coordination with other colleagues, regularly monitor issues of relevance to WFP, contribute to data analysis, producing quick guides and other communication products.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university;
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.
  • Experience working with the UN system including the UN Secretariat, Agencies, Funds, and Programmes is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent command of English, excellent writing skills
  • Data visualization, design, information products (e.g., Tableau, Publisher), and analysis is preferred.
  • Experience working and/or studying in a country other than the one in which you reside.

WORKING LANGUAGES

Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C). Another UN language preferred (Chinese, Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian)

SUPERVISION

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be an elemental part of the supervision. The External Relations Officer will be the second-level supervisor. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and the assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Have a solid overview of WFP operations, policies governing WFP work
  • Understand the various intergovernmental fora and processes and impact on WFP mandate and work
  • Insight on one or several regions where WFP works, key operations, and interagency processes
  • Overview of the UN reform and WFP’s response to the reform
  • NY perspective of humanitarian and Development financing and pooled funds

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
