About the Position

Under the guidance of the Operations and Laboratory Manager and/or designated Research Analyst, the Aquaculture Worker performs routine aquaculture husbandry, site maintenance and facility support activities to help maintain the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) fish population at WorldFish’s external backup site. The position follows detailed instructions to carry out feeding, cleaning, and simple monitoring duties and ensures compliance with basic safety and biosecurity procedures. The incumbent may also assist in broodstock management, spawning, and other aquaculture-related tasks, and occasionally support research activities at the Aquaculture Research Centre (ARC) as required.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out daily aquaculture husbandry operations, including feeding, basic water quality monitoring, and fish handling.

Assist in setting up, monitoring, and maintaining routine aquaculture systems and pond infrastructure.

Operates small machinery for site-related duties and performs basic maintenance or fixes on minor equipment and supplies to ensure uninterrupted daily operations.

Perform general site and facility maintenance, including cleaning, vegetation control, basic piping and equipment checks, and organization of tools and workspaces.

Support site activities, including visits and demonstrations, when required.

Follows clear and detailed instructions provided by the Operations and Laboratory Manager and/or designated Research Analyst. Seeks clarification when required and requests appropriate tools and materials to perform assigned husbandry and site maintenance tasks.

Promptly identify and report any abnormalities in fish health, water quality, or equipment to supervisors

Comply with all biosecurity, health, safety, and operational protocols, including proper use of PPE, to maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Requirements

Diploma or equivalent in aquaculture or related field.

Strong sense of discipline, self-discipline and responsibility.

Knowledge and experience in aquaculture and fishery.

Practical experiences of aquaculture particularly pond system.

Practical experiences of fish handling, including fish identification, fish reproduction, hatchery technologies, fish harvesting, and data recording.

Ability and willingness to work for long hours, especially during fish breeding period.

Ability and willingness to work outside office hours (during weekends, holidays, etc.) when required.

Follow strictly assigned working hours and rules.

Able to communicate effectively in writing and at a basic conversational level in English.

Desirable Skills

Ability to work under minimal supervision.

Team player with good communication skills.

This position requires the candidate to stay in organization-provided on-site accommodation (staff’s use only with basic furnishings provided) for the duration of the contract.

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position and WorldFish offers a competitive remuneration package including comprehensive benefits (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, employer provident fund contribution, paid leave, and others. The duration of the contract will initially be for a two (02) year”s period with possibility for extension, depending on funding and performance.
