DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Adult Basic Education Teacher, you will will instruct inmates and help them attain literacy and educational goals. You will evaluate adult students and assure their proper placement in the program. You will adapt curriculum materials to meet the needs of students, incorporate life skills, and write individualized lesson plans. This role requires the ability to select effective teaching techniques that will allow students to learn basic math, reading, English, science, social studies, language arts, writing, economics, and applied technology. In addition, you will assign homework, evaluate tests, and facilitate Adult Basic Education (ABE), Commonwealth Secondary Diploma (CSD), General Education Development (GED), and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) assessments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
• Work hours are 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $69,156.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Four years of paraprofessional experience assisting educational staff in a classroom setting that includes or is supplemented by one year of experience providing classroom instruction or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education; or
• A bachelor’s degree in education which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes or is supplemented by completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum, one year of experience providing classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Other Requirements:

• Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

• You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
