Location: The Village – 527 Crocker Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Setting: 100% Onsite

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 4:30pm, some weekends and evenings

Status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Non-Management

Summary:

Under the supervision of program leadership, the Arts Program Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of Studio 526 and related arts and music programming at The People Concern. The Assistant helps create a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for participants while assisting with studio activities, events, supply organization, and general program support.

This position works closely with individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, mental health challenges, and other barriers, and supports the use of art and music as tools for healing, self-expression, and community connection.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for participants engaged in arts and music programming.
  • Greet participants and visitors in a respectful and welcoming manner.
  • Assist with participant orientation to studio spaces, supplies, and safety procedures.
  • Support participant engagement through conversation, encouragement, and creative activities.
  • Share information about workshops, studio schedules, and upcoming events.
  • Help maintain a calm, supportive, and participant-centered studio environment.
  • Program Operations Support. Assist with the daily operations of Studio 526 and other arts-related programming sites.
  • Set up and break down studio spaces before and after programming.
  • Organize, label, and maintain supplies, materials, and equipment in the studio, art room, and storage areas.
  • Assist with inventory tracking of art supplies, snacks, PPE, music equipment, and other program materials.
  • Restock supplies and communicate inventory and supply needs to supervisors.
  • Maintain clean and organized shared spaces, including wiping surfaces, arranging furniture, and organizing storage areas.
  • Report equipment, inventory, or facility concerns to program leadership as needed.
  • Support monthly evening events, Art Jams, Open Mic events, workshops, exhibits, community events, and other program activities, including occasional evening and weekend support.
  • Assist with preparing materials and supplies for workshops and events.
  • Help pack, transport, inventory, and organize materials for off-site activities when needed.
  • Support participant sign-in and event setup/cleanup.
  • Assist staff with coordinating schedules, participant reminders, and event preparation
  • Assist with welcoming and orienting volunteers and Peer Mentors.
  • Help communicate daily tasks and studio expectations during shifts.
  • Foster positive interactions between participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with general outreach and administrative tasks related to the arts program.
  • Help update studio calendars, flyers, and signage.
  • Support staff with tours and sharing information about program services.
  • Ensure participant sign-in sheets and basic documentation are completed and organized.
  • Follow agency policies, public health guidelines, and safety procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and respectful environment for participants and staff.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly those with mental health and/or substance use challenges; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and lived or professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in illustration, visual arts, graphic design, or a related creative practice is strongly preferred

Work Environment:.

Setting:

Primarily an active, community-based art studio environment with occasional administrative duties. Work may also take place in community or field-based settings depending on program needs.

Physical Requirements:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and bend. Must be able to lift, carry, and move materials up to 35lbs as part of routine job duties.

Mobility:

May occasionally travel locally between program sites or partner locations.

Work Conditions:

Fast-paced, active, and sometimes loud environment with frequent interaction with participants, staff, and community members.

Exposure:

May be exposed to dust, cleaning supplies, and common art studio materials. Appropriate safety practices and ventilation are consistently maintained.

Physical Activity:

Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, along with ongoing studio setup and cleanup tasks throughout the day as part of regular studio operations.
