General Summary 

The Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology department at Western Michigan University seeks applications for Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology. The position will begin in the fall semester of 2025 and is a full-time, nine-month, tenure accruing position. Consistent with a student centered research university and a College of Education and Human Development that promotes partnerships in the development and delivery of programs, the mission of the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology is to develop competent, ethical and culturally sensitive counselor education and counseling psychology professionals through graduate education and scholarship. To accomplish this mission, the department offers doctoral training in counseling psychology (APA Accredited) and counselor education (CACREP Accredited) and master’s level training in counseling psychology, counselor education (CACREP Accredited clinical mental health counseling; marriage, couples and family counseling; and school counseling). We strive to recruit and retain students of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds from local, state, national and international locations. Major Duties 

  • Successful applicants will have a strong background in, as well as demonstrated potential for excellence contributing to program’s mission of preparing multiculturally competent psychologists who are prepared to work with racially diverse clients.
  • Established publication record and/or research agenda that advances the program’s emphasis on race and other issues of diversity.
  • Teach graduate courses in our APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral program, as well as core master’s level classes in counselor education and counseling psychology.
  • Teach at the Kalamazoo’s main campus and possibly at the Grand Rapids campus.
  • Chair and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
  • Advise master’s students in Counseling Psychology program.
  • Contribute to the Counseling Psychology Training Committee and participate in departmental, college, and university committee work and professional service.
  • Provide clinical supervision for practicum and internship students.
  • Appointment is for Fall/Spring semesters with the possibility for summer teaching assignments.
  • Leadership opportunities for candidates at the associate level include the role of Training Director.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in counseling psychology or “All But Dissertation Status” (ABD) with degree completion before start date, with preference for graduates of APA accredited Counseling Psychology doctoral programs from an accredited institution.
  • Possess strong research agenda and/or publication record that advances the program’s emphasis on race and other issues of diversity.
  • Ability to teach core counseling psychology doctoral courses as well as foundational master’s courses in counselor education and counseling psychology while infusing race and other issues of diversity.
  • Advise and serve on doctoral dissertation committees and potentially supervise clinical practica and internship classes.
  • Advise master’s students in Counseling Psychology program.
  • Contribute to the Counseling Psychology Training Committee and participate in departmental, college, and university committee work and professional service.
  • Demonstrate strong identity as a counseling psychologist as evidenced by active participation in counseling psychology professional organizations, and knowledge of and commitment to APA accreditation standards and processes.
  • Experience with technology and/or online teaching in educational settings.
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Individual who is eligible for licensure as a psychologist in Michigan.
  • Individual who has an interest or experience securing external grants.
  • Interest or experience using advanced instructional technologies to improve the teaching/learning process.
