Autism Teaching Assistant
Location: Walsall
Duration: Full time, ongoing
Salary: £90 – £115 per dayThe School/Role:We are currently looking for an experienced SEND teaching assistant to join a Special Educational Needs provision in Walsall, supporting young people aged 11 – 18 with SLD, ASD, and PMLD. This school is passionate about preparing students for life and supporting them to achieve their personal goals. The role is full-time and will run until the end of the academic year.As a Teaching Assistant in this environment, you will work closely with the class teacher to support the individual needs of students and ensure that they receive a high standard of education and care. You will be involved in providing tailored support, encouraging independence, and fostering a positive and safe learning environment.Key Responsibilities:
Support for Students: Assist students with Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), and other special educational needs with a focus on their individual learning needs and personal development.
Personalized Learning: Support the delivery of personalized learning plans and adapt teaching materials to meet the diverse needs of students.
Classroom Assistance: Help manage the classroom environment, ensuring it is safe, inclusive, and conducive to learning.
One-to-One Support: Provide one-to-one support to students with Autism and other special needs, assisting them with their learning, communication, and social skills.
Behaviour Management: Implement effective strategies to manage behaviour, ensuring students are supported in their emotional and social development.
Assessment Support: Assist in tracking student progress, contributing to the planning and assessment of individual learning outcomes.
Collaboration with Staff: Work closely with teachers, other support staff, and external professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student care and education.
Supporting Activities: Assist students in participating in extracurricular activities, outings, and other learning opportunities outside the classroom.
Promote Independence: Encourage students to develop their independence and life skills, supporting them in preparing for life after school.
Key Skills:
Experience with SEN Students: A deep understanding of supporting students with Autism (ASD), Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD), Moderate Learning Disabilities (MLD), PMLD, and complex needs.
Effective Communication: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively engage with students, parents, and staff.
Behaviour Management: Strong understanding of positive behaviour strategies and the ability to implement them in a calm and patient manner.
Adaptability: Ability to adapt teaching methods and resources to meet the varying needs of students with different abilities and learning styles.
Empathy and Patience: A caring, empathetic, and patient approach to supporting students with special educational needs.
Teamwork: Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with other teachers, teaching assistants, and external professionals.
Organizational Skills: Good time management and organizational skills, with the ability to support multiple students and tasks simultaneously.
Knowledge of Special Educational Needs: A thorough understanding of the different types of special educational needs and the ability to apply relevant techniques and strategies in practice.
Initiative: Ability to work independently, take initiative, and contribute positively to the school’s environment.
Requirements:
Hold a relevant teaching assistant qualification (e.g. NCFE, CACHE, or NVQ Level 2 or 3).
Eligibility to work in the UK or be a UK resident.
Experience with SLD, MLD, ASD, and Complex Needs.
At least two years of experience working with children, preferably in a similar educational setting.
Knowledge of the full curriculum and assessment frameworks, including all Key Stages.
Two professional references working with children.
