The Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) promotes and protects the public interest by governing and regulating the practice of human resource professionals across Ontario. We are seeking a lawyer with a background in professional regulation to play a key role in developing and implementing policies and processes to support the maintenance of high standards of HR practice.Role Overview
As Counsel, Regulatory and Policy, you will play a pivotal role at the HRPA. Using your experience and expertise in professional regulation, you will drive enhancements to our practices, policies, and processes; provide legal support and advice to the HRPA; and develop resources for HR professionals.
This role is ideal for a legal professional who thrives on having a varied workday, balancing regulatory operations with policy development and implementation and legal advice—and who is passionate about making a meaningful impact on workplaces in Ontario and beyond.
Key Responsibilities

• Regulatory Oversight & Compliance: Act, or advise the HRPA or committees, in relation to regulatory matters (e.g., complaints and appeals).
• Policy Development & Implementation: Spearhead enhancements to the HRPA’s regulatory policies and practices.
• Legal Advisory Work: Provide general legal guidance (contracts, legislative changes, caselaw).
• Process Optimization: Identify and implement efficiencies within regulatory operations, enhancing effectiveness.
• Training & Knowledge Sharing: Develop and deliver training programs for committee members and HRPA staff on topics such as legal reasoning, decision writing, and bias.
• Member Engagement & Education: Create legal content for HRPA newsletters, website resources, and professional development initiatives to ensure HR professionals remain informed about their regulatory obligations and changes in the law related to labour and employment.

What You Bring

• JD (called to the Ontario Bar) with 2 to 7 years of legal experience, with at least 1 year at a regulatory body or advising regulatory bodies.
• A belief in the importance of professional regulation coupled with a growth and development mindset.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
• Ability to manage multiple projects while delivering high-quality work.
• A proactive, adaptable approach with a commitment to excellence, objectivity, and ethical decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with complaints or disciplinary matters at a regulatory body.
• Experience in labour or employment.
