Applications are invited for a full-time position at the level of Research Staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Radiology, Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and as Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
The Athinoula A. Martinos Center seeks a qualified candidate to fill the position of Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiology and as Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the Department Radiology of Harvard Medical School. The ideal candidate will serve as the Director of the Human Imaging Core and will act as technical lead for its Imaging Core.
The Director of the Human Imaging Core is responsible for maintaining the performance and integrity of the Center’s human scanners, all of which are fully dedicated to research. These currently consist of a wide bore 2ch transmit 128ch receive 3T scanner, a 16ch transmit, 64ch receive 7T scanner with multinuclear capabilities, 32ch receive 3T scanner with multinuclear capabilities, a 64ch receive 3T high gradient performance scanner with multinuclear capabilities, a 3T scanner with a PET insert, a 3T whole body MR-PET scanner, and a 72ch receive 3T head-only scanner with 500 mT/m amplitude, 600 T/m/s slew rate gradient performance. A latest generation 3T scanner is in the process of being installed and a second 7T scanner equipped with a head-only gradient with 200 mT/m amplitude, 900 T/m/s slew rate gradient performance is scheduled within the next year.
In this capacity, they will plan, manage and execute all software and hardware upgrades,
coordinate and manage the implementation and use of all ancillary research devices,
coordinate and manage all Works-in-Progress (WIP) and non-product (C2P) pulse sequence applications, provide overall physics support for research efforts, and act as escalation support for image quality, escalation support for protocol development, and escalation support for all MRI system issues.
They will also be directly involved in the review of quotes, planning, implementation, and testing of all new MRI scanners and equipment, including assuring appropriate shielding, accurate gauss line determinations, strict adherence to all MR safety guidelines, and interfacing with attending construction renovation meetings, etc. They will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
As director, they will also provide physics expertise and guidance for Martinos Safety Committee, as well as the physics expertise and guidance as a member of the Martinos Steering Committee. In addition, as a part of the Core Manager’s meetings, they are expected to provide regular updates on the status of the MRI scanners.
They will be responsible for managing three personnel – one individual with hardware expertise, one with software expertise, and one engineer with specific skills in designing and building RF coils.
The candidate must have excellent communication skills to interact productively with other Core members such as the Martinos Operations team, administration and faculty, and the Martinos general faculty and support staff. In addition, they are expected to interact and communicate closely with the scanning manufacturer’s leadership, local and national Research and Development collaborations team, service and engineering teams, and the manufacturer’s global headquarters scientists and engineers.
They must have good troubleshooting, problem solving, and technical skills to provide the necessary expertise to properly support the unique aspects of the human scanners and the research that exploits it.
Superior understanding of the physics of MRI is a must to fully support the needs of and provide guidance to Martinos Center faculty and their research.
Periodic presentations and lectures are expected for communication as well as education to researcher faculty and staff.
Requirements: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in MRI physics, electrical or biomedical engineering, computational or computer science, and medical physics. Advanced training and/or experience in magnetic resonance imaging within a technical and academic environment preferred.
