Research Directions

Research Project: Brain-Computer Interface and Neuromodulation Technology for Clinical Applications

Research Goals: Establish specific neurophysiological biomarkers with long-term neural activity recording and artificial intelligence algorithms to for conditions such as pain, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and disorders of consciousness. Develop adaptive closed-loop intelligent neuromodulation technologies, conduct translational research into clinical application by collaborating neurologists and neurosurgeons.

Research Content:

1. Study the brain network mechanisms of deep brain stimulation neuromodulation.

2. Research on neural biomarkers and closed-loop neuromodulation strategies and methods.

3. Clinical validation of implantable closed-loop neuromodulation methods for Parkinson’s disease, pain, and disorders of consciousness.

4. Clinical validation of non-invasive neuromodulation techniques for sleep disorders and Alzheimer’s disease.

Applicants can choose one of the above research directions based on their background and interests while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in algorithms, neuroscience, or clinical research.

Qualifications:

1. Background in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, computer science, or related fields; experience in neurophysiology, neural signal analysis, artificial intelligence algorithms, or clinical neuroscience research is preferred.

2. Recently obtained or about to obtain a Ph.D. degree, or completed postdoctoral training within 5 years of obtaining a Ph.D.

3. Published at least 1-2 first-author papers in relevant international journals, with strong English reading, writing, and communication skills.

Supports:

1. Initial 2-year contract, extendable up to 4 years for outstanding candidates. Salaries ranging from RMB 250k to 400k ($34k~55k).

2. Support for applying for various scholarships and research projects, including Shanghai Scholarship for Excellence Program, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Research Program, National Natural Science Foundation Research Program.

3. World-class research facilities of neuromodulation, neuroimaging of 7T fMRI and 3T connectome, and neurophysiology of MEG and EEG; opportunities for collaborating with international institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

Contact Information:

Applicant should send the resume, representative full-text papers, and research interests statement to: shouyan@fudan.edu.cn and niec_istbi@fudan.edu.cn. Please write “Application for Postdoctoral Position + Name” in the subject line.

Introduction to the Group Leader:

Professor Shouyan Wang is the Vice Dean Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Director of Neuromodulation and Brain-machine-interface Centre, Fudan University. He is the Chairman of Neuromodulation Branch of Chinese Neuroscience Society. Vice Board Chairman of Brain Computer Interface Alliance of China. He had conducted research on neural information decoding and brain stimulation at University of Oxford (2002-2007), University of Southampton (2007-2012) and Chinese Academic of Sciences (2012-2017) before he joined Fudan University. He has developed research platform for neuromodulation, which include research facilities for invasive neuromodulation, non-invasive neuromodulation, advanced technology development of intelligent neuromodulation and neuroimaging as well. His research interests are intelligent neuromodulation, digital healthcare and translational research into clinical applications.

In the past five years, he has led over ten major projects, including the Innovation 2030 “Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence” Key Special Project and the Shanghai “Brain and Brain-Inspired Intelligence” Major Special Project, and filed more than 30 patent applications. He has long been engaged in research on deep brain stimulation neuromodulation, neural information processing, and promoting the translation and application of cutting-edge neural technologies.
